  • Professional Academic Advisor, Avila University (Kansas City, MO)

    The Avila University College of Science & Health is seeking a Professional Academic Advisor that will coordinate and organize advising activities as well as collaborate with faculty for professional health (pre-health) and kinesiology majors.

    Responsibilities
    • Assist in the student’s intellectual and professional/career development for student success.
    • Help students sharpen decision-making skills.
    • Provide guidance in the integration of the student’s academic program with future professional and career goals
    • Devise and deliver an effective communication strategy that inform students of relevant and current information on preparation practices and application procedures for graduate and/or professional schools.
    • Review and implement relevant technology tools to support and enhance the professional advising and management processes.
    • Create new and nurture current working relationships with admission personnel and faculty from partnership institutions.
    • Serve on the Pre-Health Advisory Committee and a principal writer for the university's professional letter request process.
    • Assist relevant related student organizations.
    • Remain current and knowledgeable on health professional school admission processes and standards. Monitor changes in standardized test (e.g., MCAT) policies and/or procedures and their effects on pre-health applicants.
    • Participate in regional and/or national associations.
    • May teach courses as needed for the programs
    • Perform other duties as required.

    Minimum Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s degree with at least two years of experience in student advising at the university level
    • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills necessary
    • Must have evidence of working in a fast paced environment with multiple demands and changing needs
    • Ability to work with students in 1:1 or group advising settings
    • Ability to learn and stay current of complex program requirements, policies and procedures required
    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Master’s degree in a related field. Candidates must possess a Master’s degree to instruct university courses.
    • Demonstrated advising and/or counseling skills desirable. Experience using student information systems and technology platforms
    • Demonstrated ability to develop and/or deliver programs preferred
