The American Medical Student Association (AMSA) is excited to invite members of the NAAHP community, and your students, to participate in our annual Health Equity Week of Action (HEWA), from February 23rd – 27th, 2026. This week-long series of events seeks to connect healthcare students, trainees, clinicians, and health education professionals to leaders, scholars, activists, and organizers, situated both within and outside the House of Medicine, whose work challenges us to think more expansively about health equity and all that it encompasses. Perhaps more importantly, this week seeks to connect event participants with each other, creating space for reflection and dialogue on health equity as we collectively envision what a more equitable and just world might look like.
AMSA remains acutely aware that this is a moment in which education, scholarly inquiry, dialogue, and collective action centered on health equity are increasingly under attack. From the shuttering of DEI offices in schools across the nation, to mounting pressure to ban words such as health equity, disparities, and even women and female from research grant applications, to decisions from the LCME to strike language on diversity programs and partnerships from their accreditation standards for U.S. medical schools, authoritarian political intrusion on medicine and medical education have had a serious impact on how health equity can be taught, studied, and embedded into the training that future physicians receive.
Through Health Equity Week of Action, AMSA strives to safeguard spaces for students to come together and take action in community with fellow students and allies from all backgrounds, stages of training, and levels of exposure/experience with health equity. Stay tuned!
