  • Health Professions Advising Coordinator - George Mason University - Fairfax, VA

    Job Description:
    Advising and Coordinating Responsibilities
    • Serve as knowledgeable and skilled health professions advisor for students interested in fields such as medicine, podiatry, optometry, dentistry, veterinary, pharmacy, allied health programs such as physical and occupational therapy, physician assistant, athletic training, therapeutic recreation as well as other health professions schools.
    • Provide individual, walk-in group advising to the pre-health students; create of differentiated service options based on student needs
    • e students on strategies for exploring academic and career interests, academic planning and preparing with the goal of becoming a competitive applicant for the health professions programs.
    • Advise students regarding their readiness and timing of their pre-health application and how to navigate the application process.
    • Support students during application process including application materials, timelines, admissions tests, personal statements, letters of recommendation, school selection, and interviews.
    • Communicate and collaborate with CAART team colleagues regarding health professions advising, activities and trends.
    • Maintain strong relationships and partnerships with George Mason University academic departments and undergraduate advisors as well as the University Career Service’s industry counselors regarding health professions advising and programming. Establish Health Professions Advisory Board.
    • Maintain active membership in the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (NAAHP).
    • Coordinate programs to enhance awareness and knowledge of varied health professions fields. Manage communications and event announcements.
    • Coordinate workshops and information sessions for health profession applicants through the application process.
    • Represent CAART at events hosted by Admissions, Orientation, University Career Services, and Academic Departments.
    • Develop and maintain publications, website, listserv and social media.
    • Support health professions student organizations and their faculty/staff advisors.
    • Develop relationships with Admissions Offices and Deans of health professions schools.
    • Represent George Mason University at professional conferences and associations.
    Assessment and Reporting
    • Maintain accurate records of students’ progress in meeting standards/deadlines regarding applications, admissions test scores, etc.
    • Report application outcomes and student success profiles.
    • Collect and maintain data pertaining to admission and acceptance rate of George Mason students to health professions programs. 
    Minimum Qualifications
    • Master’s degree required;
    • Higher education experience in academic advising, teaching, or counseling required;
    • Experience building partnerships with university colleagues and external constituents required.
    • Experience supporting students from a diversity of backgrounds required.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • All of the minimum qualifications, plus;
    • Education in a science or health-related field preferred.
    • Experience advising or teaching students interested in health professions preferred
