Highlights Related to Health Professions Advising

The Supreme Court Will Rehear Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin

The Supreme Court announced that it will again hear arguments in Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin in the upcoming term. The case concerns the admissions policy of the University of Texas at Austin. Previously, the court sent the case back to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals on the grounds that the court did not apply strict enough standards when originally hearing the case. The AAMC will submit an amicus brief to provide up-to-date research about well-documented health disparities and the necessity of a diverse student body, as well as information about holistic, individualized admissions practices at medical schools.

Three Newly Accredited Medical Schools Show Diversity of Mission

The nation now has a record 144 medical schools with the addition of three new medical schools that received preliminary accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education: California Northstate University College of Medicine in Elk Grove, Calif.; CUNY School of Medicine in New York, N.Y.; and The University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School in Austin, Texas. "At a time when the nation faces a doctor shortage, these schools and their diverse missions will help ensure greater access to care for a growing, aging population," said AAMC President and CEO Darrell G. Kirch, MD.
