Job Description:We invite you to join the Career Center at UC Berkeley as a member of a dynamic counseling team, providing innovative and comprehensive career services. We work with a wide spectrum of students, including undergraduates, graduate students, and alumni. In alignment with the Career Center’s direction of providing customized service to our constituencies, we are seeking someone to provide specialized counseling and programming for students seeking a health profession or industry career using their biological sciences degree. This professional will work with another counselor to develop, coordinate and implement career services, resources, and programs for students with these interests, and foster strong, collaborative relationships with faculty, staff employers.
Responsibilities Include:
- Provide career counseling services to students and alumni interested in a health profession or industry career using their biological sciences degree.
- Provide students with guidance and information regarding career decision-making, self-assessment, career options, goal setting, career research, the job/internship search process graduate school admissions.
- Deliver a variety of career workshops and programs on such topics to help students prepare for successful transitions to careers and/or graduate school.
- Establish new relationships with corporations and other organizations that provide full-time and internship opportunities for biological/life science students.
- Develop tailored e-communications and other written materials customized for pre-health profession students. Write and maintain specific sections of the Career Center website and social media outlets, and contribute to unit publications as needed.
- Research, analyze and report on annual admissions data as it pertains to medical schools and other health professional schools
- t ongoing needs assessments/surveys. Analyze and address unique issues and problems concerning career services and/or marketplace trends for bio/life sciences students.
- Collaborate with staff/faculty and other members of the University community from colleges/schools, student service units, and student organizations regarding strategic design and development of resources and programs/workshops; build effective partnerships through regular communication, collaboration, and consultation.
- Participate on unit-wide committees and projects as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A Master’s Degree in Counseling, Career Development, Student Affairs, Higher Education, or related field, or equivalent education/experience.
- Demonstrated experience providing career counseling to address a broad range of career/employment issues, as well as experience with students interested in health-related careers.
- Experience designing and delivering career-related workshops and programs.
- Advanced knowledge of employer recruiting strategies, job market trends, occupational, career and employment information sources as well as the application process for graduate and health-professional school.
- Advanced knowledge of counseling processes, career decision making, learning styles, and job search techniques.
- An advanced understanding and ability to work with and serve individuals from diverse backgrounds utilizing cross-cultural counseling skills.
- Demonstrated experience in establishing effective working relationships with a variety of partners, including staff of all levels, faculty, employers alumni; understanding of the political acumen needed to be effective.
- Experience and proficiency with incorporating the use of technology to deliver career services.
- Excellent writing, presentation, and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 1+ years experience advising pre-health professions students
