    Job Description
    The Integrative Biology Department is seeking an Academic Advisor. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term professional faculty position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head. The Academic Advisor will perform academic advising and program support for Biology and Zoology majors on the Corvallis campus, as well as online students in the Biology minor, offered through OSU Ecampus. This includes Marine Biology option and Ecology option students in the Biology major. This position will also participate in the School of Life Sciences and College of Science recruitment and retention efforts and represent the College of Science at recruitment events. Some evening and weekend work is required. In-state and out-of-state travel is required.

    60% Academic Advising
    • Provide primary academic advising services for Biology and Zoology majors within the Department of Integrative Biology, including students in the Marine Biology option and Ecology option. This includes advising for baccalaureate core requirements and major requirements as well as career advising.
    • Advise online Biology minors and backup Zoology major online advising as needed.
    • Advise new students at summer START and other New Student Orientations.
    • Assist School of Life Sciences and College of Science students with general requests such as change of major forms, petitions, referral to appropriate services, etc.
    • Assist students seeking reinstatement after suspension from the University.
    30% Program Support
    • Coordinate and instruct in the IB 198 professional development first-year course for Biology and Zoology majors with the assistance of other IB advisors.
    • Collaborate with the other IB advisor leading Integrative Biology Club events.
    • Co-lead summer START orientation with other IB advisors.
    • Coordinate IB proactive advising interventions through providing reports to the IB advisors each term.
    • Prepare and maintain advising materials such as program bulletins, websites, etc.
    • Participate in faculty meetings and other departmental duties as assigned by the Head of Integrative Biology.
    • Promote and support diversity in the School of Life Sciences (SLS) and the College of Science (COS) programs.
    • Serve on the College of Science Scholarship Committee.
    • Serve on , college, school, or department committees as assigned.
    10% Other
    • Communicate and coordinate duties with Integrative Biology Lead Advisor, School of Life Sciences Coordinator or Undergraduate Success and Engagement, College of Science Head Advisor, and the Head of Integrative Biology.
    • Attend local, regional and national meetings as appropriate.
    • Participate in student recruitment activities such as Beaver Open House, Fall and Spring visits
    • Meet with prospective students and parents as part of OSU’s Visit program.
    • Represent OSU and the College of Science at various college fairs, community college visits, and minority recruiting events.
    • Other duties as assigned (duties may change depending on advising needs).
    Minimum Qualifications
    • Bachelors degree in a life science field.
    • One year of experience in undergraduate academic advising, student activities programming, teaching or counseling in a college or university setting.
    • Excellent computer skills with the ability to use or learn MS Outlook, Web for Advisers, MyDegrees, Ellucian Banner, and CORE.
    • Competency in email and internet skills, word processing (MS Word), spreadsheet (MS Excel), and a web browser such as Explorer.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to work accurately with student records.
    • Initiative in organizing programs, planning events, preparing advising materials, and communicating with other advisors and program heads.
    • Must be able to work during evenings and weekends as needed.
    • Must have the ability to provide the means to travel to student recruiting events held locally and nationally.
    • Must have a demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
    • Must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq.
    • Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

    • Must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified, and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030 et seq.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Masters degree in a life science field or a student services related area.
    • Experience teaching or presenting to large groups.
    • Work experience related to environmental or animal biology.
    • Skills in web design, Powerpoint, Publisher, and graphic design.
