  • ACE Advisor Pre-Health, Grand Canyon University (Phoenix, AZ)

    Grand Canyon University is seeking a new Academic and Career Excellence Advisor (ACE Advisor). Major responsibility of this role is student advising around the Purpose Plan which helps guide students in exploring and planning their academic and career paths aligned to their values, skills, and interests.

    Advisors will help students develop academic and career plans and goals, and leverage available resources to achieve academic success. They work in a fast-paced, drop-in and appointment-based office setting delivering advising services on a year-round basis in both one-on-one and group settings.


    • Meet with students one-on-one or in group settings to advise on academic, graduate school, and career success plans.
    • Provide career advising services to students which includes activities such as resume and cover letter development, interviewing techniques and strategies, job search techniques, and overall career exploration.
    • Assist students in exploring internships and employment opportunities that match their Purpose Plan in collaboration with the Strategic Employer Initiatives & Internships department.
    • Coach students on how to leverage academic success tools.
    • Prepare regular reports including departmental and college-specific dashboard information.
    • Conduct workshops in ACE Centers and/or classroom presentations at the request of faculty on various academic, graduate school prep, and career topics such as study skills, resume writing, interviewing, developing personal statements, networking, etc.
    • Assist with academic retention initiatives in collaboration with the First Year Experience team, colleges, and other university leadership.
    • Manage designated student population to ensure active guidance of their Purpose Plan and document interactions in requisite database for follow up and tracking purposes.
    • Stay current on topics and practices related to graduate school admissions and job market, resume, interviewing, and the use of social media for professional job hunting/networking.
    • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders to promote the success of students, the college, and the University.
    • Handle other duties as assigned which contribute to the success of the ACE department.

    • Bachelor’s degree required from a regionally accredited institution.
    • Minimum one-year work experience in a higher education setting in a role which assists students in academic planning, academic advising and coordinating of available support resources.
    • Good relationship management skills and ability to work cohesively in a team environment requiring good social and interpersonal skills.
    • Distinct ability to ask open-ended questions, actively listen and construct meaningful responses to assess student academic and career interests and needs.
    • Outstanding communications skills, including verbal and written with a good command of the English language.
    • Meticulous with a keen attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy.
    • Strong public speaking skills with an ability to connect with diverse audiences.
    • Ability to quickly learn designated college programs and career opportunities and to be able to provide informed information to students.
    • Capable of working independently without direction or oversight.
    • Must be able to work simultaneously on multiple projects.
    • Ability to cope with changing priorities, rolling deadlines and a fast-paced environment effectively.
    • Knowledge of planning and organizational practices to ensure smooth operations and to meet deadlines.
    • Ability to thoroughly understand and abide by federal and university guidelines regarding student confidentiality requirements.
    • Ability to establish and maintain recordkeeping/databases systems, retrieve information and prepare reports, graphs, charts and metrics.
    • Capacity to handle sensitive situations with students who may need both professional and academic support; ability to engage the appropriate resources if a student has an issue outside of the scope of the ACE center.
    • Computer proficiency including email, internet, MS Office Suite, social media platforms and other software applications.
    • Must be able to pass pre-employment background check.
    • Must be willing to work when necessary beyond normal business hours which may include evenings, weekends or holidays.
