The Health Professions Admissions Guide: Strategy for Success continues the tradition of providing detailed, up-to-date information on a variety of health professions. It begins with the initial questions students should ask when exploring these professions and continues through to the application procedure, giving helpful advice to increase chances of acceptance. Written and edited by a committee of experienced health professions advisors, and with the valuable contributions of the NAAHP Advisory Council members, the Health Professions Admissions Guide delineates a simple and effective strategy to approach the often complex process of applying to health professions schools.

The Health Professions Admissions Guide is an invaluable reference guide for both students and advisors. As an important reference on the advisor’s shelf, a wonderful addition to the resource library for students, or as the text for an introductory course on the health professions, this guidebook will help students prepare for their health professions education.

Preparing a Successful Professional School Application

Write for Success:  Preparing a Successful Professional School Application order form

Third Edition, 2005

Write for Success: Preparing a Successful Professional School Application is geared specifically to helping you write clearly for the tasks related to the health professions application process. Through the use of examples of both successful and unsuccessful applications, critical reviews of actual applications by three admissions deans, and experienced advice from the authors, Write for Success will help you to realize your dreams of matriculating into a health professional school.

The importance of writing clearly must not be underestimated. Admissions committees report that factors other than GPA and entrance exam scores play a critical role in the evaluation process. One of the criteria mentioned repeatedly is the personal comment section of the health professional application. Write for Success is designed to help the student with writing this statement for the professional school application.

Meeting the Challenge of the MCAT:
A Test Preparation Guide

Third Edition 2006
Now available

In their roles as teachers and advisors of premedical students in the Medical/Dental Education Preparatory Program (MEDPREP) of Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, the authors have had the privilege of knowing hundreds of preprofessional students.

After working with these young people, as well as other premedical students who have attended their workshops across the country, they have come to the conclusion that the concerns of students preparing for medical school are similar, with questions about the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) being ubiquitous.

There is considerable confusion about how to handle what often seems like the monumental task of taking the MCAT. To the authors' dismay, some students view the MCAT as a mysterious entity, or even worse, some masterminded plan to trip them up. To others it is simply overwhelming. For many, taking the test is a necessary burden and is, for most practical purposes, felt to be out of their control. These views leave students anxious and searching for tricks to beat the test in order to exert some control over their future. The information in this manual can help alleviate some of the anxiety and clear up some of the mystery associated with preparing for the MCAT. This manual is primarily for premedical students. However, those who provide guidance to premedical students such as their advisors and medical school admissions officers should also find the information useful.

The authors' objectives are to persuade the student that preparing for and taking the MCAT are manageable tasks and, secondly, to provide some guidance on how to handle the tasks in an effective way. The authors hope to convince students to view the MCAT as a challenge they can meet. Students are encouraged to take control and expend the necessary efforts to ensure success. Thus the title, Meeting the Challenge of the MCAT.

The major headings of each section of the manual are action words. The authors intentionally used this form to underscore the message that students exert important control over their performance. The two primary sections are Be Informed and Be Proficient.

The first section stresses the importance of knowing the MCAT, including its structure and the range of skills and content assessed by the test. The importance of knowing one's self, in terms of knowledge, skills and attitudes that will affect test performance, is also emphasized. Ways to make realistic selfassessments in these areas are suggested.

In the second section, the authors offer recommendations about devising a manageable MCAT preparation plan, suggest learning and review activities that will be valuable as students prepare, provide advice about practicing for the exam, and conclude with tips to help students perform their best on the day of the test.

Premedical Advisor's Reference Manual

Premedical Advisor's Reference Manual order form

Ninth Edition, 2008

The ninth edition of the Premedical Advisor’s Reference Manual continues the tradition of providing a valuable and comprehensive resource for advisors on the policies and admissions procedures of US and Canadian allopathic medical schools and osteopathic medical schools.

Information in the manual was obtained by advisors who interviewed admissions deans or directors at each medical school.  Issues and questions of concern to advisors that may not be answered on the school’s website or in the Medical School Admissions Requirement book (published by the Association of American Medical Colleges) or Osteopathic Medical College Information Book (published by the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine) is included in a single, user-friendly resource.

For each entry (i.e. medical school) there are six categories: the admissions process, the competitive applicant, the interview, communication with students, special features and citizenship/residency.  Advisors can learn how schools screen for interviews, what types of letters of evaluation are preferred, how the wait list is used, what the deferral policy is, and much more. Often telephone numbers or email addresses for advisor-use only are included.

Advisors understand that some of the information that admissions personnel may share with them is confidential in nature and must be used judiciously by advisors as they assist their students.  Advisors who purchase the manual must be officially employed by a college or university in a role that includes premed advising.  Advisors sign a statement verifying that, and agreeing to maintain the confidentiality of the manual.

The Premedical Advisor’s Reference Manual is a reflection of the collaborative and collegial relationship that exists between advisors and medical school admissions deans and directors.  It is a must-have for advisors
