Service-Learning Partnerships in a First Year Seminar:
Linking Science to Young Scholars

Chrystal Kelly

Abstract – The author describes a service-learning opportunity at Colorado State University.  An introductory seminar for pre-health professional students includes teaching a laboratory for fourth grade class studying human anatomy.  The lab has the college students teaching the anatomy of a sheep’s heart, which they dissect as a demonstration.  In order to prepare for their presentation, the seminar participants need to learn the anatomy themselves, practice the dissection and be able to answer questions the 4th graders might have.
